Spirit of Daytona Racing Endures to Finish Rolex 24 At Daytona

Daytona Beach, FL 25 January 09 – The Spirit of Daytona Racing No. 09 Porsche V8-powered Coyote overcame several setbacks over the course of 24 hours of hard racing in the 47th Rolex 24 At Daytona before racing to the finish with the Boy Scouts of America-livered machine. The team completed 649 laps to finish 11th in the Daytona Prototype class with motorcycle champions Jeff Ward, Scott Russell, and Jason Pridmore sharing the driving duties with Spirit of Daytona Racing pilot Guy Cosmo.

The race marked the first round of the 2009 Rolex Sports Car Series as the team continued to move the development curve forward for the Coyote chassis teamed with Porsche V8 power.

Starting the race from the seventh row, the team was dealt its first bad hand in the early laps, as the electrical charge dropped, forcing the drivers to race in the high cockpit temperatures without the benefit of helmet blowers or coolers as all non-essential electrical systems were switched off to conserve power over the long run.

Before the race passed the first hour mark, the challenge got even bigger after the clutch went, only to then be followed up by a throttle cable issue that also slowed the team’s progress. But the team continued on undeterred, focused on bringing team partner Boy Scouts of America a finish in their first Rolex 24 together.

Despite the race being the first Rolex 24 appearance for Pridmore and Russell—Ward made a start in the 1997 Rolex event—the motorcycle champions continued to show a quick adaptation to running on the high banks on four wheels rather than two, keeping the car moving at a quick clip over and over on the 3.56-mile infield road course.

The team continued to press on through the night and into the long Sunday race day. As the field thinned from attrition while the team established a strong rhythm and moved up the charts, there was one final set back as a fuel line broke and caused a small fire in the pits as Cosmo came in to turn the car over to Russell. Quick work in the pits by the team and fire marshals saw both Cosmo and Russell out of the car unscathed. After taking the No. 09 behind the wall for the first time after over 22 hours of racing, the team found the problem, fixed it, and sent the machine back out to race to the finish.

Appropriately enough, “Mr. Daytona” Scott Russell took the machine across the finish line for the 649th time to accept the checkered flag just after 3:30 PM ET local time.

“I couldn’t believe that they could get the car fixed after the fire and back out on the track,” said Russell. “There have been a couple of times that I had to pinch myself that this whole experience is really happening. The team has been great. It’s amazing to get through the adversity that we did, that the whole team fought back all they way to get to the finish. This Coyote did its job and I know the team is looking forward to getting the new one soon and starting that development process. This was a fatiguing race, but I had a blast and would love to do it again. It was great to have Guy driving with us because I’m not sure what we’d have done if he wasn’t with us. It was a long day! Hopefully I’ll get a chance to race again as soon as (Rolex next race) VIR.”

“This was a great opportunity to race in this Rolex 24 after watching it for so many years and just wanting so badly to race in it myself so it’s great for us to get to the finish today,” said Pridmore. “To be fair, we certainly had our share of problems in this race but the team never gave up and never stopped fighting. It’s a big challenge for us to jump into this sandbox like this, but I think we just kept getting closer and closer and we’ d made a lot of progress before the fire. You always want to finish on top, but this was our first time out. I’d love to do this again.”

“There was a lot of rubber and junk out there on the track in my last stint, but the car was pretty much consistent throughout,” said Ward. “I got a lot more time in the car in this race than when I was here in 1997 because even though we had some set backs, the car just kept running, all through the night. This is a great group of guys to work with and I want to do more races like this, but it’d be great to get more time testing and getting ready but if there was a chance, I’d really like to do more. The seat wasn’t perfect, so I’m going to be sore and tired tomorrow, but this was a tough race!”

“It is an amazing feat for us to finish this race, with the guys doing this for the first time and all the problems we had to overcome to get to the end is just amazing to me,” said Cosmo. “But all the guys did great. It was a grueling race, and I think we are all feeling beat up and cramped up, but I think this was a good chance for us to work with some fantastic champions and to also keep the process of learning this new Coyote bodywork going . I’m happy that the fire didn’t cause any injuries and that we were able to get back out and keep going to have Scotty take it over the finish line.”

“We put a pretty big challenge in front of ourselves to have the motorcycle guys taking this on for the first time after we just got this bodywork a month ago. So I think we have to be happy to come out of this with a lot of data and another finish in the Rolex 24 as well,” said Team Owner Troy Flis. “This was a great opportunity to work with some really cool people, and we’re all counting our blessings to get to do that. I’m just looking forward to getting the new car and to hopefully having the chance to go to VIR with a car that we’re already familiar with inside and out.”

Spirit of Daytona Racing Ready for Rolex 24 At Daytona

Porsche V8-Coyote on 8th row as AMA Champs ready for four-wheel enduro challenge

Daytona Beach, FL 22 January 09 – The Spirit of Daytona Racing No. 09 Porsche V8-powered Coyote will start the 47th Rolex 24 At Daytona from the eighth row after Guy Cosmo set a fast lap time of 1:42.475-seconds around the 3.65-mile road course at Daytona International Speedway. Cosmo will be sharing the driving duties with a triumvirate of motorcycle champions as Jeff Ward, Scott Russell, and Jason Pridmore will take on the Rolex 24 starting on Saturday afternoon in the AMA Motorcycle Team-liveried Coyote.

The fifteen-minute qualifying session set the top 20 positions for both the Daytona Prototype and GT Class grids, with the final qualifying spots up for grabs on Friday. The Rolex weekend is a home event for Spirit of Daytona Racing, and the team is looking to improve on their performance in the 2008 race event, which saw the team score the highest Porsche-powered finish in the Daytona Prototype class. With new faces in the car, and a new look outside of it, Spirit of Daytona is focused on doing well in the big battle over 24 hours starting on Saturday.

“The car is still not where we want it to be yet, but we made some solid strides again today,” said Cosmo. “We’re focused on having a car that is not only good over a long tire run, but also one that’s good for all four drivers. So we might compromise a little on one-lap speeds, but at the end of the day that doesn’t really matter for this race. We just need to be able to run lap after lap at a sustainable pace, so where we start really won’t factor into that.”

The lap time was over two and a half seconds faster than the team went in qualifying last year as the development program for the Coyote-Porsche V8 continues to increase pace.

“This is the first time we’re racing with this new bodywork, so we are learning what the car likes and just trying to find a balance that’s good for all four guys,” said team owner Troy Flis. “We were hoping to be a little bit closer to the front with some of the times we did in practice, but we’re happy to have made the progress that we have so far. The car has run like a train so we’ve been able to make good use of the track time we’ve had available and that’s vital for us to be ready for Saturday. This race is a huge challenge, and we’re just looking to get going, set a pace, and learn as much as we can.”

Friday will see two Rolex Series practice sessions before the race action kicks off at 3:30 PM ET on Saturday. FOX will bring live coverage starting at 3:00 PM before SPEED picks up coverage starting at 4:30 PM.

Guy Cosmo To Drive Rolex 24 with Spirit of Daytona Racing

Photo by John Thawley “Put me in, coach!”

(Daytona Beach, FL) 19 January 09—Guy Cosmo will once again be driving in the Rolex 24 At Daytona with Spirit of Daytona Racing as the Palm Beach, Florida-based racer will join a trio of motorcycle champions for the twice around the clock classic next weekend.

Driving a Porsche V8-powered Coyote chassis, Cosmo will be teamed with Jeff Ward, Jason Pridmore, and Scott Russell. While his three co-drivers are legends in the motorcycle ranks, with scores of AMA championship titles to their credit, the threesome is making their first Daytona Prototype start in the biggest test of man and machine.

Cosmo is no stranger to his co-drivers, having been tapped to serve as set-up driver and coach in several tests leading up to the big event. He was expecting to play that same role right through the running of the race, but instead will be suiting up to do duty as a co-driver as the team looks to not only score a strong result in the 24, but to also continue the development of the machine as the Rolex Sports Car Series season develops.

“I’m really happy to be driving in this race for Spirit of Daytona Racing,” said Cosmo. “We made a lot of progress during the test and the guys (co-drivers Ward, Pridmore, and Russell) have soaked everything up and shown their colors as being true champions. I just want to help make sure we are where we need to be set-up wise, and then get out so they get as much track time as possible before the race starts. They are still looking to get more seat time and keep building that confidence, so hopefully they will get more than enough come race time! I was happy to spot for the guys, but this is an even better opportunity for me and I’m just looking forward to a long two days in the office this weekend!”

Thursday, January 22 will kick the race activities off with practice and qualifying, with the race taking the green flag at 3:30 PM on Saturday. FOX will carry live coverage of the opening stages of the race before handing off to SPEED to continue the live broadcast.

Guy Cosmo Ready for 09

Continues relationship with Spirit of Daytona in 2009

(Daytona Beach, FL) 2 January 09—As a new year dawns, one racer is charged up to take on what’s next as Guy Cosmo looks ahead to the upcoming Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series season.

Cosmo will be in action this weekend as the Rolex racers take to the track for Daytona’s “Roar Before the 24” to get warmed up for the Rolex 24 At Daytona, which will take the green flag at 3:30 PM ET on January 24. Cosmo has been confirmed as part of the Spirit of Daytona Racing entry for the 47th running of the endurance classic, although his role with the team will see Cosmo putting a different side of his skill set to use once the race starts.

Entered along with a triumvirate of motorcycle champions, Cosmo will be behind the wheel during the test days and leading up to the 24 to help with set-up decisions on the unique Porsche V-8 powered Coyote with fellow Sprit of Daytona Racing drivers Scott Russell, Jason Pridmore, and Jeff Ward as the three motorcycle champs share the behind the wheel duties for the Rolex 24.

While Cosmo will miss being a part of the driving squad for the 24-hour challenge, he sees the situation that will see him coaching and spotting for the 24 as an important element of his opportunity to continue his involvement with Spirit of Daytona Racing and the development of the Porsche V-8 powered Coyote.

“The relationship I have with Troy (Flis, Spirit of Daytona Racing team owner) is great and being loyal to this program is something that’s really important to me,” said Cosmo. “That’s key to me as a person at the track, or away from it. And the chance to develop a completely different package is one that you just don’t get that often in your career so I’m looking forward to what we can accomplish at Daytona and then taking those lessons and continuing to move forward through the season.”

The team is expected to confirm in the coming weeks a 2009 Rolex Sports Car Series program that will see the No. 09 Porsche V8-Coyote in action through a limited schedule of races. Cosmo will be leaned on as the lead driver to not only work with his co-driver to get the most out of the car, but to also keep pushing the potential for the package with Spirit of Daytona engineers and crew.

“It’s rewarding as a driver to be part of that process and it’s also its own challenge to stand out as a racer in this kind of situation,” said Cosmo, who scored two top-six qualifying results with the machine in 2008. “We showed last year that this Coyote Porsche V-8 has some real potential, and I’m excited to turn that potential into performance and results.”

While the checkered flag from the KONI Challenge 6-Hour at VIR seems like it was ages ago, the pace hasn’t slowed one bit for Cosmo in the meantime. In addition to his work with the team focusing on the continued development of the Porsche V8-Coyote package, Spirit of Daytona Racing has also engaged Cosmo as a coach and set-up consultant as the team prepares the motorcycle champions with some limited testing in the off season.

The role of coach is not a new one for Cosmo, who has also used the brief off-season to continue to develop his Cosmo-Sport enterprise. Cosmo-Sport manages track events as well as retail and driver development programs, and has continued to grow during the fall and winter months.
